This is the earliest release to be included in this Countdown – it made it into the Australian charts in late 1956, arriving nine weeks before yesterday’s song Love Me Tender.
It’s an interesting contrast with Love Me Tender – a melodic ballad – when compared with Don’t Be Cruel. Don’t Be Cruel is a more upbeat, rock and roll record demonstrating so early in his career that Presley was going to be so much more than just another young rock and roller.
Don’t Be Cruel was covered by Cheap Trick in 1988 and even though it peaked at number 6 (four places higher than Presley’s) I always felt that it was a poor imitation of the real thing.
