This is a song, co-written by the great Marvin Gaye, that has many, many incarnations, including versions by The Mamas and The Papas, The Grateful Dead, Van Halen and, probably most famously, Mick Jagger and David Bowie.
The original version was released by Martha and The Vandellas in 1962, reaching the tops of charts all around the world. In Australia, it only reached number 86 in 1964. I found that really quite surprising, given how well known the song, and, specifically, the Martha and the Vandellas version, is.
Jagger and Bowie’s version reached number 1 in the mid-80’s but I don’t really rate that version compared to this original Motown interpretation.
Martha and the Vandellas had another single – Nowhere to Run – reach number 45 in 1965 but they were their only singles to even go close to reaching the national charts here.
