This song was, of course, a hit for John Lennon and was recorded by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music as a tribute just after Lennon’s assassination. It is said that on the night of Lennon’s murder, Ferry felt the need to pay tribute to Lennon during his concert and this was the only song that everyone in his band knew well enough to perform. To an extent, its release had a polarising effect – some saying that it was exploiting a terrible tragedy while others said it was a fantastic way to remember him. There’s a bit of “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” at work here. In my mind, very appropriate and a great way to remember one of the greats.
