OK, let’s address the elephant (African elephant, obviously) in the room here – “I know that I must do what’s right … as sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti.” is geographically wrong. A little like Glen Campbell being able to make it across various states of the US in half a day, as described in By The Time I Get To Phoenix.
So, acknowledging and moving past its factual accuracy, let’s think about this fantastic song. One measure of a good song … in my mind, anyway … is when you hear the introduction of the song and you feel an absolute need to sing every word from start to finish. Many songs’ intros are recognisable and some make you want to sing along … others not so much.
This – in my opinion, Africa’s finest – is one such compulsory sing-along songs that make you feel good. Unless, of course, you are on the Serengeti, straining to see Kilimanjaro …
