Part of the infamous “27 Club” – artists who died at the age of 27 – Janis Joplin had the world at her feet in the late 1960’s, becoming an icon of the alternative music scene. Despite her fame and influence, she only ever charted once in Australia with this song – which captures so much of her personality and demonstrates what a fine musician and singer she was.

This song was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster meaning that both writers and the artist had alliterative names. Sadly, this song only reached the Australian charts in March 1971, almost six months after her untimely death.

The song has now been covered by hundreds of artists and become something of a standard – ironic given the kind of individual Joplin was.
