This song was written by the man often dubbed “The Fifth Beatle”, Billy Preston with uncredited input from Beach Boy Denis Wilson. Originally recorded by Preston at a faster tempo, it wasn’t until later in 1974 that Cocker created the slow version that became his most successful single until Up Where We Belong with Jennifer Warnes in 1982.

You Are So Beautiful seems to have always been around and significantly more prominent than its peak of number 44 might suggest. Maybe it is because it is regularly included on compilation albums and on the playlists of “golden oldie” radio stations.

What a fantastic song – ideally suited to the husky tones of the late Joe Cocker.
