This is one of those songs that just by its arrangement and its lyrics takes you right to the action. You can imagine people gathered around in the Northern town. You can feel the cold weather in winter 1963. You can imagine the news of John F Kennedy and The Beatles (here’s an interesting piece of trivia – 22 November 1963 was the day that John Kennedy was assassinated AND the day that The Beatles released their second album With The Beatles).
Without setting out down this path, one of the things that is evident from my selections is that one criterion of being included was to have a very different sound to anything else going around at the time. So much of the new wave pop sounded similar but this one was something totally different and memorable.
Also, probably the only top ten hit to feature a cor anglais – look that up, go on!
