If I had asked you to nominate the most successful folk / “flowers in your hair” song of the mid 1960’s,
I wouldn’t have been surprised if you had nominated this one.
It is absolutely classic Mamas and Papas – the Greenwich Village sound that was so prominent during that era. Wonderful harmonies by John and Michelle Phillips, wrote the song, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot And yet, in 1966, this song struggled to number 56 on the Australian charts.
It is listed as number 89 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and during a week in 1966, it was the 56th most popular song of the WEEK not of all time.
2 minutes and 38 seconds of pure unadulterated mid-1960s music right there – and we couldn’t even drag it into the top 40 in Australia.
I don’t get it.
