Not bad for a song that was written and recorded in a matter of a few hours. Prolific songwriter Jimmy Webb and singer Glen Campbell have already appeared in the top 10 of this countdown with Galveston and just missed out with By The Time I Get To Phoenix. This one, though, tops them both

According to Webb, the song was never finished which accounts for why it just drifts off at the end. Campbell was in the recording studio and requested a new song – Webb sent through what he had done and it was recorded.

A simple tune, with the story of a midwest American lineman doing his job. As with so many of the songs that have appeared in this and in other countdowns, you can imagine yourself see this song unfold. Driving down a highway in regional America, feeling the pangs of homesickness … a great song and worthy of the number 2 ranking

Tomorrow, we reveal number 1 and I am pleased to say that it is an Australian song, albeit about a location that is not in this country. More about that at 10:00am tomorrow.
