Almost bordering a cliche in these sorts of countdowns, Howzat represents so much of what Australian music was doing in the mid 1970’s. The glamour of the boys from Sherbet, the whole Sherbet vs Skyhooks debate and, retrospectively the first time any serious attempt was made to use cricket terminology in music (Come on Aussie, Come On was still two years away).

This was the opening track of the 1976 Howzat album which also contained some other great tracks such as Lady Of The Night, Gimme Love, Hollywood Dreaming and Blueswalking. If you haven’t listened to the whole album recently, it might be time to do so. It also marked the first Sherbet album to feature the late Harvey James who had replaced Clive Shakespeare during the making of the album.

It is certainly not the best Australian song ever written / recorded but it would border on un-Australian not to include it.
