Another song written and sung by John from 1965. He has said that this was his “Dylan” period and that it was just an attempt to sound like Bob Dylan. The song featured in the feature film, Help!
There is some suggestion that the song’s meaning is ambiguous – most obviously being a song about unrequited love and someone having to hide their true feelings. The other more obscure suggestion is that at the time, John was married to first wife, Cynthia, but was not allowed, by his record company, to promote his married status.
Either way, a great song with melancholy overtones. Well worth a listen.
