An absolute classic by a man whose real name was William Fries, who started out in advertising. C.W.McCall was a character that he used in a series of ads for Old Home Bread. He wrote a number of truckie-related songs which often contained an environmental message.

Whilst he had some success on the US Country charts, this song arrived at the time when CB radios were a major fad and created a perfect storm for him.

A second version of the song was recorded for the 1978 movie Convoy which starred Kris Kristofferson, Ali McGraw and Ernest Borgnine.
