According to John, this was the first time that he written lyrics that were about himself. The original lyrics, which are available for viewing in a London museum, outline things from his childhood, including references to Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.
The piano part in the middle was written by George Martin who said he was unable to perform that segment at the right tempo for the song and so with the recording made at an octave lower and half speed, it was sped up to fit into the song. This is the reason that the piano has a tone similar to a harpsichord.
Sean Connery performed In My Life as a poem on a George Martin compilation album in the 1990’s. The fact that the song stands up on its own as a poem gives some insight into how well-written the lyrics are.
