As we look back just over 40 years since Peter Allen burst back onto the scene with this number 1 hit, there is something of a cringe factor that bubbles to the surface for me. Apart from the over-the-top flamboyance of his stage presence, the ridiculous concept of someone’s smile sending you to Brazil makes little if any sense to me.

The disappointing thing about this song is that, for me, it takes away from his obvious songwriting and performance ability as seen in many of his other songs – I Honestly Love You, Don’t Cry Out Loud, I Still Call Australia Home, etc, etc.

All that said, this became the song most associated with an Australian performer who took on America and found success. For that, Peter Allen deserves to be mentioned in this countdown.
