This song is the most recent release to appear in the Top 30 One Hit Wonders countdown. It is a song rich in imagery, much of which was based on a visit he made to Memphis in 1985. References to people (Elvis Presley, Reverend Al Green and Muriel Davis Wilkins) are based on specific experiences he had on that trip – a visit to Graceland, listening to Al Green preaching and listening to Davis at the Hollywood Cafe, 35 miles out of Memphis.
Sometimes the reason a song is a hit is because of the song, sometimes it’s the singer and sometimes it is an irresistible combination of both. Cher tried a cover version which was mildly successful and Cohn was never able to replicate his success here in Australia – evidence that, if this instance, it was just a fantastic combination of song and artist.
