Stevie Wonder had reached the top 100 here in Australian four occasions before My Cherie Amour made its way onto Australian radio in 1969. The song had been recorded across a few months in late 1967 and early 1968 and was released almost twelve months later.
My Cherie Amour only just missed out on giving Stevie Wonder his first top 40 hit, peaking at 41 in 1969. After this single, the next few started to really establish Wonder’s position as a commercially successful artist with his next three chart entries reaching the Australian top 20.
The song has a slightly daggy feel, I guess, but I like to think of it as easy listening at a time when there was some seriously progressive music starting to hit the airwaves.
Probably my favourite Stevie Wonder track, to be honest.
