Arguably, one of the best … and best known … songs from the 1970’s, Hotel California was the title track of the Eagles 1976 album that went on to sell over 30 million copies.
Amazingly, for a song so well-known, it didn’t make the top 40 in Australia. In fact, it peaked at number 53. Full of imagery and, in keeping with much of the Eagles lyrics, it speaks to excess, the negative sides of success, etc.
It is a wonderful track, lifted from one of the best albums of the 1970’s. It is also the last of six songs in this countdown that relate to California or a town or road in that state. Says something about the epicentre of the rock and roll lifestyle, doesn’t it?
