It is the ultimate sing-along song, isn’t it? When you hear the opening notes of the song, working up to the majestic pause, you just can’t help yourself, can you?
“Vol-a-re, oh-ho. Cant-a-re, wo-ho-ho-ho.”
And you’re into it.
Not surprisingly, originally an Italian language song but brought to English-speaking audiences by Bobby Rydell in 1960. For the record, one of my favourite applications of the song was as the closing song for the very excellent, far-too-short-lived TV show, Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush. Kill off one of the so-called reality TV shows and bring that one back!
