Arguably the most recognised Beach Boys song of them all, epitomising everything that is Californian and everything they stood for. You could be forgiven for assuming that California Girls would have been top ten material at the very least. But in fact it came in at number 41 back in 1965.

Twenty years later, in 1985, David Lee Roth recorded a version of the song, employing Carl Wilson to sing backing vocals. Roth’s version was significantly more successful from a chart perspective, reaching number 6 here is Australia.

While it was more successful, I think that the Beach Boys version is the better option – it really does capture the sound of the 1960’s West Coast sound better than just about any other song of its time.
