We are really getting to the pointy end now with some amazing songs. Yesterday was, in fact, Yesterday, a beautifully simple and straightforward melody. Today, we move onto one of the best exponents of harmonies from the 1960’s, Simon and Garfunkel.
The Sound of Silence was first recorded in 1963 but had no impact on the charts at that time, with the result that Garfunkel went back to university and Simon headed back to London. In 1965, the original version started to receive some airplay in Boston which led to a remix with stronger instrumentation being completed without Simon and Garfunkel’s knowledge.
Eventually, the song was picked by radio along the US East Coast and became a number one hit for them in the US, and subsequently, breaking across the world.
I love the amazing harmonies, I love the slightly dark tone of the lyrics – it’s just a great song!
Tomorrow, we start the top 5!
