Michelle won the Song of the Year Award at the 1967 Grammy Awards and yet was not released as a single in Australia. It has been suggested that the instrumental was written by Paul to impress some French friends and wrote the words later at the encouragement of John Lennon.
The French part of the lyrics were suggested by a French teacher who was married to one of Paul’s friends, asking her to come up with a phrase that rhymed. She responded with Michelle, ma belle. Paul came back and asked to translate “these are words that go together well”.
A favourite of everyone who is called Michelle which makes it easy to select a request for anyone who goes by that name! McCartney was asked to play it for Michelle Obama at the White House as well.
