Like yesterday’s number 10 song, I’ll Be Gone, today’s is another that is instantly recognisable. Warren Zevon was certainly never considered commercially oriented – he was slightly left-field and very cynical. A most unique talent.
Werewolves of London was his only commercial hit in Australia and featured Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass – both of Fleetwood Mac fame. The single was produced by Jackson Browne.
As is often the case, when an artist has a song that everyone wants to hear him play, he got sick of playing it and, according to a biography abut Zevon, he grew to dislike the song immensely. But it’s catchy – it fact, in a poll on BBC Radio, it won the award for the best opening line to a song – it’s very worthy of inclusion in the top 10 of this countdown.
