Johnny Chester started his recording career in 1961, after having performed at local dances around the suburbs of Melbourne. In the 50 years that have followed, Johnny has hosted radio and television programs, has won acclaim as both a mainstream (e.g. Highway 31, Gwen, World’s Greatest Mum, etc) and country singer (including being a multiple Golden Guitar winner) and has supported a range of touring acts including Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash and Charley Pride. Oh, and then there was that tour in 1964, where he opened the Australian concerts for a band called The Beatles.
Johnny graciously agreed to join me on Radio Ga Ga as part of his golden jubilee – 50 years as a recording artist. During our conversation, we touched on all sorts of topics including our shared upbringing as Fitzroy Football Club supporters, life as a Fable label recording artist, Jigsaw and, of course THAT tour.
